Advantages and Applications of Oxygen-Enriched Combustion Technology

Increasing Flame Temperature
Oxygen-enriched combustion technology, by reducing nitrogen content and lowering both air and flue gas volumes, allows the flame temperature to rise significantly as the oxygen proportion in the combustion air increases. Research shows that when the oxygen concentration reaches around 26% to 30%, each additional percentage point can raise the flame temperature by 35°C. For example, at an oxygen volume fraction of approximately 28%, the overall furnace temperature can increase by about 50°C. However, further increasing the oxygen concentration beyond 30% yields only marginal temperature gains, while significantly driving up the cost of oxygen generation, making it less economically viable.

Faster Combustion Speed and More Complete Combustion
Oxygen-enriched combustion accelerates fuel combustion rates significantly compared to burning in air. For instance, hydrogen burns 2-4 times faster in pure oxygen than in air, and natural gas burns roughly 10.2 times faster. By employing oxygen-enriched or pure oxygen combustion, not only does combustion speed increase, but heat transfer also improves. Additionally, higher temperatures facilitate the combustion reactions, resulting in more complete combustion and effectively eliminating soot pollution.

Lowering Fuel Ignition Temperature
The ignition temperature of fuel is not a fixed constant. For example, the ignition point of carbon monoxide is 609°C in air but only 388°C in pure oxygen. Therefore, using oxygen-enriched or pure oxygen combustion can intensify the flame and increase the amount of released heat.

Reducing Flue Gas Emissions
Oxygen-enriched combustion reduces the volume of nitrogen, which constitutes 4/5 of the air and does not participate in combustion. Since nitrogen also carries away a significant amount of heat during combustion, using oxygen-enriched gas can cut down on exhaust gas emissions, thereby improving combustion efficiency.

Enhancing Heat Utilization Efficiency
Oxygen-enriched combustion technology boosts the efficiency of heat utilization. For example, when using regular air combustion at a heating temperature of 1300°C, the usable heat is about 42%. When using air with 26% oxygen, this figure rises to 56%. Within the range of 21% to 30% oxygen concentration, heat utilization efficiency improves most rapidly as oxygen concentration increases. This enhanced efficiency translates to better energy savings.

Reducing the Air Excess Coefficient
As oxygen levels in the combustion air increase, the nitrogen content decreases, allowing the air excess coefficient to be reduced. This, in turn, reduces fuel consumption and contributes to energy savings.
